Ever notice how when justifying a child’s misbehavior no one ever says stuff like “girls will be girls” or “she’s a girl”, but the list of things a “young lady” can’t do is almost endless?
You learn from a young age that masculinity comes with freedom; femininity comes with restrictions.

I find that it’s easier to keep your true self buried under several layers of untrue selves, to protect yourself.
Monster” is derived from the Latin noun monstrum, “divine portent,” itself formed on the root of the verb monere, “to warn.” It came to refer to living things of anomalous shape or structure, or to fabulous creatures like the sphinx who were composed of strikingly incongruous parts, because the ancients considered the appearance of such beings to be a sign of some impending supernatural event. Monsters, like angels, functioned as messengers and heralds of the extraordinary. They served to announce impending revelation, saying, in effect, “Pay attention; something of profound importance is happening.
Basically if it sounds like it could be playing at an 80’s night club inhabited by vampires I’ll probably like it

that’s the whole point, saying that utena’s just a girl so she can’t become a prince, bc ohtori academy is a mini patriarchal society where girls can’t escape their gender roles, unless they leave, but who would want to leave a place where you’re coddled, it’s a comfort zone
so the revolution utena brings to that world is not apparent to anyone there, bc they can’t see beyond that world, same with akio
the whole fucking point is that the idea of the prince is very flawed and harmful
so utena leaves that world to escape the roles of princess and prince and witch, she rejects all of them, bc the prince couldn’t save anthy, and the princess is doomed to become a witch if she tries to escape her gender role, and the witch endures the suffering which should be due to the prince
they’re fucked up ideas
and anthy took it for so long bc the world beyond, where she is sure to be shamed and hurt and rejected, is so much fucking scarier
and she doesn’t want anybody to save her, esp when they don’t fucking get it, which utena didn’t until anthy stabbed her and she reached for her in her coffin
bc utena didn’t want to save anthy at that moment, if she wanted to she would have tried pulling anthy out of the coffin, but she didn’t. she just wanted to see and touch anthy for the first time, bc before all utena could see her as was the rose bride, a symbol to boost her ego as a ‘prince.’
and utena wanted to see anthy again, but on anthy’s own terms
and that’s just fucking powerful
that’s why i think the series is really great
idk idt anthy stabbed utena bc she loved her
i really think she hated utena at that moment
and i think that in the series, up to that point, she both loved and hated utena at the same time yet she couldn’t allow herself to love utena bc she knew that utena would be like all the others, and utena did prove herself to be like them, using anthy to satisfy and validate her own ego as the prince character
until utena went back for anthy even after seeing her ugly side, and didn’t do it out of princely convictions, she did it just so that they could see each other for the first time
and that’s when anthy allows herself to love utena and leave ohtori academy
